Frequently
Asked
Questions

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re curious about freediving, starting your first course, or just wondering what breath-hold training is all about.
Q --> What is freediving and how is it different from scuba diving? A --> Freediving is diving underwater on a single breath without the use of tanks or breathing apparatus. Unlike scuba diving, which relies on equipment and air supply, freediving focuses on relaxation, breath-hold techniques, and inner awareness. It's quieter, more natural, and often described as a meditative experience.
Q --> Can anyone learn to freedive, even if I’m not a strong swimmer? A --> Yes! You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer to start freediving. We help you build water confidence step by step. Basic comfort in the water is enough to begin, and our beginner courses are designed to help you feel safe, relaxed, and in control.
Q --> Is freediving safe for beginners? A --> Absolutely — when done properly with trained instructors and safety protocols. At Freedive & Beyond, we follow the internationally recognized Molchanovs education system and emphasize safety, relaxation, and proper technique from day one.
Q --> How long do I need to hold my breath to start freediving? A --> There’s no specific requirement. Most people can hold their breath for 30 seconds to a minute when they start. We’ll teach you how to safely increase this time through proven breathing, relaxation, and CO₂ tolerance techniques.
Q --> What is the minimum age to start freediving? A --> With us, children can begin learning breath-hold basics from as young as 8 in a fun and safe environment. The full Molchanovs Wave 1 course is available to students aged 16 and up (or younger with Junior Instructor certification).
Q --> Do I need any previous experience to join a freediving course? A --> Not at all. Our Wave 1 beginner course is perfect for first-timers. Whether you’ve never snorkeled or you already spend time in the ocean, we tailor the experience to your level.
Q --> What equipment do I need for freediving? A --> For beginner courses, you’ll need a mask, snorkel, fins, and a wetsuit. We provide gear rentals and also give you guidance on choosing your own if you decide to buy.
Q --> How deep do you go in beginner freediving courses? A --> In the Wave 1 course, the target depth is between 12–20 meters (39–65 feet). But the focus isn’t on going deep fast — it’s about learning proper technique and enjoying the process safely.
Q --> Will I learn to equalize pressure in my ears underwater? A --> Yes! Equalization is a core skill in freediving, and we’ll teach you step-by-step how to clear your ears comfortably using the Frenzel technique.
Q --> Will I learn to equalize pressure in my ears underwater? A --> Yes! Equalization is a core skill in freediving, and we’ll teach you step-by-step how to clear your ears comfortably using the Frenzel technique.
Q --> I’m nervous about being underwater — can freediving help with that? A --> Yes. Many people find freediving a powerful way to overcome fear, anxiety, and claustrophobia. We focus on breath, body awareness, and calming techniques to help you feel grounded and in control.
Q --> What will I learn in the Molchanovs Wave 1 freediving course? A --> You’ll learn the science of breath-hold diving, relaxation breathing, equalization, finning technique, static and dynamic apnea, safety procedures, and how to dive up to 20m deep. It’s a full introduction to safe, enjoyable freediving.
Q --> Where are your freediving courses held in South Africa? A --> We run courses in Gauteng, Durban, and Sodwana Bay. We also offer trips and workshops throughout the country on request.
Q --> How long is the freediving course and what does it include? A --> The standard Wave 1 course takes 2 to 3 days and includes theory, breathing exercises, pool skills, and open water dives. You’ll also get access to the Molchanovs online platform for ongoing learning and community support.
Q --> What’s the difference between Wave 1, Wave 2, and Wave 3? A --> Each course follows the previous one, building foundations, then refinement, and more advanced skills as you are ready for the next step. Wave 1: Introductory, safe breath-hold diving to 12–20m Wave 2: Intermediate skills and dives up to 30m, advanced equalization Wave 3: Deep freediving to 40m with advanced techniques, safety & coaching focus
Q --> Do you offer freediving training for kids or teens? A --> Yes. We offer kids' breath-hold workshops, intro sessions, and parent-child training. Full certification is available for teens who meet safety and comfort requirements.
Q --> Can I train for freediving if I live inland or in Gauteng? A --> Yes! We start with pool-based static and dynamic sessions in Gauteng, and you can complete the depth portion at Miracle Waters — an inland dive site in Gauteng with crystal-clear water, depths up to 34m, and several underwater wrecks to explore. It’s a safe and enjoyable training location, even if you’re far from the ocean.
Q --> What is CO₂ tolerance and why is it important in freediving? A --> CO₂ tolerance is your body’s ability to handle rising carbon dioxide levels during breath-hold. Training this improves your comfort and calmness, delays the urge to breathe, and boosts your performance safely.
Q --> How does breath-hold training help with stress and performance? A --> Freediving teaches you to stay calm in high-pressure situations, both physically and mentally. It’s useful for athletes, performers, tactical professionals, and anyone wanting better control over their stress responses.
Q --> Do you teach freediving for tactical teams, surfers, or athletes? A --> Yes. We offer custom breath-hold and water survival training for tactical teams, VIP protection, surfers, swimmers, and other high-performance groups. These workshops are focused on CO₂ tolerance and composure under pressure.
Q --> Is there a medical check or health requirement to join a course? A --> Yes. All students complete a medical questionnaire before joining. In some cases, a doctor’s clearance may be required, especially for conditions like asthma, ear issues, or cardiovascular concerns. Safety first!
